COME TOGETHER

"He say, I know you, you know me"
| the beatles |

Safety in numbers. As previously reported on these pages, we recently had the distinct pleasure of speaking before the Inland Empire ABC - Association of Bridal Consultants - at Menifee Lakes Country Club. Arranged by John Goolsby, Christa Davidson & Wendy Alexis, the topic we chose was "Critical Mass: Creating Wine Country Buzz." OK, that's a mouthful. Read: "Networking among Wine Country Wedding venues and vendors to garner the attention of Brides."

Leading into our observances of Wine Country Weddings' current State Of The Buzz, we shared our experience as members of the Maui Wedding Association. The MWA is a group of 200 Wedding venues and vendors who came together to deal with the situation of Oahu dominating the Hawaii Wedding market, hosting more Weddings each year than all the other Hawaiian islands combined. We pooled our $100 membership dues and took out a small advertisement in a new Wedding magazine - Martha Stewart Weddings. The experience taught us the road to success demands patience, fortitude and a lot of friends. Nevertheless, we changed the game and within 3 years Maui cleaned Oahu's clock, hosting 5,000 Weddings a year!

At the risk of coming across as the propeller heads of the Wedding world, we hold these truths to be self evident: the blueprint for the future of Wine Country promotion lies in the coming together of regional Wedding professionals to place our locale front and center in the minds of Brides.

With that thought in mind, we'd like to share our observations of local Wedding Buzzsters and their pursuits to keep Wine Country in the headlines. But first the goods on the tremendous growth potential for regional Weddings:

We urge venues and vendors to band together to promote Wine Country for destination Weddings. Yeah, yeah, this won't be the first time we've been accused of near-hallucinatory positive thinking. We realize any proposal that suggests sleeping with the competition may sound counter-intuitive, but - don't go wobbly on us - such paranoia is thin, at best. No one has a monopoly on good ideas, so we're going to play Lear's Jester and present the 411 on networking.

Subscribing to the mall Food Court Theory, we spur fellow vendors and venues - rather than look at each other as the bęte-noire - to caucus with one another for the benefit of all. When we go to The Mall, we all know that within an hour of shopping, we're starving! And what's cool at malls is we don't have to hunt and gather for a meal, we just go to the Food Court. No, duh! These restaurateurs have long-since seen the light that the most important objective is to lure hungry shoppers to one central location. Once the Shopping Carnivores have arrived, the restaurants can then divvy them up.

The same holds true for Temecula Valley Weddings, in that the most important goal is the virtuous cycle of encouraging Brides to see fit to be married in Wine Country, followed close on the heels by regional Wedding professionals producing the evidence as to why Brides should select their venue and vendor services. As Brides continually tell us, Wine Country sells itself.

It thrills us to no end when we see fellow Wedding professionals working toward the betterment of all. So allow us to present the efforts of some key members of our community as their innovative ideas shout it out loud-and-proud for Wine Country Weddings!

These are just a sampling of the Rainmakers generating tail winds in Wine Country, juicing Temecula Valley Weddings.

What did we learn here today? The final conclusion to be drawn is that it's not about the specific content of the above individual efforts, it's about Pimp-The-Buzz, with the sum being greater than the parts. Wine Country Weddings are at a paradigm shift - ready to explode - and we all want to bask in the radiation!

Wedding venues & vendors wishing to share their Wine Country
creating-the-buzz pursuits are invited to e-mail their tales to:

spumante diamante

We stand in awe of whoever's designing South Coast Winery's sensuous labels. By our count, Spumante Diamante is the third SCW label CAKE's featured over the past three years! The winery's as talented in label design as they are in wine design.

Referred to by the Winery as "Lady D," Diamante is delicately sweet, with a come-hither natural acidity that maintains a balance both provocative and beguiling. South Coast quixotically describes Spumante Diamante as "frothy, with frizzante." (We have no idea what that word means, but it's so cool!).

Our take on this sparkler is that upon opening, we were mesmerized by the 1,000's & 1,000's of swirling tiny bubbles. Holding our glasses before the candles in our living room, we both agreed we'd describe the color of the wine as straw. Dropping our noses into our flutes, we smelled orange blossoms, with just a hint of almonds.

So enough gazing and smelling - let's drink this wine! The first taste was like pouring floral candy over the tongue, a delightful demi-sec style of sparkling wine. Although the sweetness was intense, it was cut by the light, refreshing effervescence.

South Coast Winery winemakers Jon McPherson and Javier Flores continue to do Wine Country proud. (We can't wait to see the next label!).

TEMECULA VALLEY IN THE PRESS

We have to give-it-up for Peggy Evans - Executive Director of the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association - and her accomplishments at landing Wine Country in the press.

First case in point: the current November / December 2009 San Diego edition of the Auto Club's magazine - Westways - contains an article by Jean T. Barrett on Southern California Wine Country day-tripping, including Temecula Valley.

Mentioned in the article are CAKE favorites, Ponte Family Estate Winery, Callaway Vineyard & Winery, Mount Palomar Winery, Leonesse Cellars and Baily Vineyard & Winery.

This is huge, Jerry! Nearly everyone who drives a car belongs to AAA, Westways Magazine in included in the membership, which translates into gazillions of readers gazing the pages about a day trip to Wine Country.

Secondly, it's been arranged for the Wine Editor of Sunset Magazine - Sara Schneider - to come to Wine Country to tour and write about Temecula Valley wineries. Sunset-freaking-Magazine! O.M.G!!

Our friends at the Fallbrook Area Visitors Bureau - Don McDougal (President) & Linda Kissam (Executive Director) -

PALA MESA RESORT

This summer we had the pleasure of meeting Maralyn Hill, President of the International Food, Wine & Travel Writers Association, at a Thornton Winery luncheon. Following lunch that day - Maralyn, CAKE and several other writers migrated to Temecula Creek Inn for a tour of their beautiful property. We're now pleased to see Maralyn - & Brenda Hill - under the guise of The Tandem Tasters, returning to our locale to review our old alma mater, Pala Mesa Resort.

Maralyn Hill & Brenda Hill (no relation) are close friends who worked in marketing in Connecticut, before gravitating to California. In addition to traveling together - and critiquing wine, cuisine and destinations - the two have written a book, "Our Love Affairs With Food & Travel."

Our living in Fallbrook, plus having spent 6 years working at Pala Mesa Resort, makes us a soft touch for anyone writing about either. Maralyn & Brenda have a video of their Pala Mesa experience on the Where And What In The World website, which we invite you to visit:

http://blog.whereandwhatintheworld.com/2009/10/video-pala-mesa-resort-and-golf-course.html.

Still on the subject of Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook, all are invited to an upscale event featuring local artists and artisans from the greater Fallbrook area. This is a great opportunity to purchase Holiday gifts, with all price ranges and art mediums available, including watercolors, oil, pen & ink, photography, ceramics and sculptures.

Aqua Terra Restaurant will have food and beverages available for sale.

CHAMPAGNE PARTY WITH AN EDGE
Pacific Edge Villa  Laguna Beach

Our family's been in & out of Laguna Beach since the 1950's (some of The Fam still lives there), so given any excuse to be Laguna-bound, like . . . we're all over it! Case in point: on October 14th, CAKE-pal Kerry Pulverman, of de Luxe Events, organized Wedding Edge Team's Bridal Show at Laguna's Pacific Edge venue. Now this is the kind of Bridal Show the ladylike half of the CAKE staff can comfortably slip into. So with a 3-pack of Ponte Winery Girls in tow, Karon Cartwright, Kristen De Wyn & Tori Bailey - from the Winery's Wedding department - they ventured to the shores of Laguna to pour Ponte sparkling Moscato for The OC Brides-to-be, while throwing light on Wine Country weddings.

Photographed by Jacqueline Lovato of Lovato Images, the evening was an educational event assisting Brides in planning their Weddings.

In addition to Ms. Pulverman and Ms. Lovato, Team Wedding Edge consists of makeup specialist Michelle Hardy of Storybook Bride, DJ Daisuke Takeoka of Mobile & Nightlife Disc Jockey and honeymoon specialist, Linda Welty-Cohen

But wait, it gets better. Following the Bridal Show, Ms. Pulverman invited vendors of the female persuasion to her Irvine home for a slumber party. (Slumbering being an abstract concept). Sometimes you just have to let your hair down!

HOW GREEN IS OUR VALLEY

"One Thing Leads To Another"
The Fixx

FETZER WINERY

This month we didn't hear from any Temecula Valley or Fallbrook venues about their green practices, so we decided to trek up to our former stomping grounds in Mendocino County to Fetzer Winery and revisit their winery and its shades of green.

During our days in Mendocino, we served on the Board of Directors and the Fundraising Committee of the Mendocino Theatre Company (outrageous theater!) and Fetzer Winery was always the go-to-winery who supplied wine for MTC's fundraisers.

[As an aside, this is a common thread with all wineries, including those in Temecula Valley. They're extremely generous when it comes to donating their wine to help community groups raise funds].

Among Fetzer's sustainability policies, their 10,000 square foot administration building is almost entirely built of recycled materials. Beyond this, 100% of the energy serving the building is from renewable resources, including solar, wind and geothermal energy. Fetzer wine bottles are made from 35% recycled glass and their case partitions use 100% recycled material. Finally (for the time being, anyway), Fetzer's reduced its waste to landfills by 96%, from 1,724 cubic yards to 60 cubic yards. All the while doubling wine production!

[» AND FINALLY «]

At the CAKE Studios, we're big Oprah fans and we flipped-out during the flash-mob dance sequence at Ms. O's 24th season kickoff party. Taking place on Chicago's Magnificent Mile - with "I Gotta Feeling" performed by the Black Eyed Peas - the entire audience of 20,000(!) performed a seemingly spontaneous dance for an unsuspecting Oprah.  The performance began with one girl in a blue top dancing her brains out at the base of the stage, soon joined by additional audience members dancing along with her, and then, as the rest of the audience joined in - goose bumps! - the realization a flash-mob dance was underway!

So what does Dancing With The Star have to do with the price of grapes in Wine Country? Sweet nothing! Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, so even if you're not an Oprah fan, or a Black Eyed Peas fan, do yourself a favor by indulging in a minute of watching the dance. (Click the icon on the bottom-right of the video to have the dance fill the screen. Once the video ends, press the Esc key [escape] on your keyboard to return to earth). Click, volume, dig!
