How Green Is Our Valley? Not to be Ronnie Rain Cloud, but the evidence is alarming: human kind is blanketing the Garden of Eden with glacier-melting CO2 emissions, the Arctic's warming to the point Sandals is on pace to locate a Resort there, the hole in the ozone layer's a continuing fly in the ointment and locally, leaves are staying on the grape vines longer than in recent memory. (The vines need to lose their leaves during the cold season to settle into their annual, revitalizing, long winter's nap). Something's amiss. |
These symptoms throw into relief that we've got a whole lot of mess going on, potentially resulting one day in there being no SoCal Wine Country. As temperate agricultural regions march steadily northward, we could find bananas and pineapples growing in California, while vineyards luxuriate in the northern reaches of Alaska. We're haunted by the specter of awakening one fine morning asking: "Dude, where's my wine?"
If this comes to pass, we can consider rendered moot any plans for our children's children to share our love of Wine Country. Considering that the measure of any society is the legacy left for subsequent generations, we're more fearful of posterity's wrath than our own personal consequences. We have the choice of accepting the status quo (the moral equivalent of holding a flashlight under our collective chins like the un-dead) or shining a positive light toward striking a blow for Mother Earth.
Its a tall order, but it remains up to all of us to bring something to the table and - for starters - wine lovers are doing their part with their favorite pastime resulting in an increase in land devoted to agriculture.
As for the wineries? In word and deed, they're leading a sea change of rethinking how we tread on the land. Practical, as well as philosophic, wineries are well-aware that many green practices enhance the bottom line.
With these thoughts in mind, CAKE introduces an occasional feature - How Green Is Our Valley? With Temecula Valley's wineries serving as agents of change in sustainable agriculture, we're asking them to share their green approaches to husbandry of the land.
We're especially interested in thought-provoking efforts CAKE's readers will be inspired to echo. We all recycle our wine bottles, so we're looking for pursuits more on the unique side.

We lead off with one of Ponte Family Estate Winery's suggestions for each of us to contribute to the green end of the color spectrum. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CSA CSA is Community Supported Agriculture. In a nutshell, your area's local farmers supply you weekly with a box of fruits and vegetables. A win/win/win situation, local farmers are supported, most of the produce is organic (read: healthy) and it often costs 10%-20% less than the big box grocers. |
The first step is to become a member of a neighborhood CSA. Next, the fruits and vegetables are selected by the farmer and then the purchase is pre-paid through the CSA website. For those within striking distance of Wine Country, CSA boxes can be picked up at Ponte Winery on Tuesdays from 3:00-6:00 at the Smokehouse Restaurant hostess stand.

little black dress
merlot
This is yet another delightful wine we stumbled across at our Wine Country market of choice - Barons Marketplace. The Sex-In-The-City-ish label was irresistible and as we learned sitting down to dinner that evening, so was the wine! Although to date we've only seen the merlot available, the Little Black Dress website makes mention that the Winery is also producing cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot grigio. There are 34 million-with-an-M! women wine drinkers in the United States and Little Black Dress is very successfully appealing to this demographic.
We officially tasted the wine along with Baron's pork chops on the bone, which were succulently barbequed to perfection and accompanied by a salad of homegrown lettuce. This merlot is light enough to drink with summer food, pairing well with the evening's seasonal fare.
Upon opening, the wine was bright and ruby-colored in the glass and moderately tannic on the tongue. The Winemaker's notes suggested aromas of cranberries, which would go hand in hand with the tannins. As for ourselves, we tasted cherries and blackberry juice. As the evening wore on, the tannins subsided and we concurred with the Winemaker that following in the wake of a rich feel in the mouth, was a lingering finish.
The wine is aged in a combination of French Oak barrels - including new, 1-year old and 2-year old barrels- plus further time is well-spent in 2-year old American Oak barrels, adding wood notes to complement the strong fruit.

Discover The Jewel
Bridal Show
Pala Mesa Resort
|
|
There are Bridal Shows and then
there are Bridal Shows. Put June 7th's Discover The Jewel
show at Fallbrook's Pala Mesa Resort squarely in Category 2.
The Resort made a Herculean effort, came charging out of the gates with their first annual
Bridal Show and it was an affair to remember.
CAKE had the good fortune of attending this hallmark event and we were stunned by what we observed. This was no lather- rinse- repeat drill. We've a penchant for class acts and - let the record reflect - this show called to mind a gilded age.
|
|
Producing the Show was a collaboration between Pala Mesa Resort (Kat Jackson, Kendra Koenig & Kevin Poorbaugh), Michael's Flower Girl (Sheri Smith), Christina Dresslar and Hugh Swanke.
|
|
|
|
Several hundred Brides-to-be got their groove on, turning out in force to drink deeply of Pala Mesa's pleasures. The Resort chummed the waters in spectacular fashion with cheese kabobs, mini pizzas and champagne. Our observation was it took no great flight of fancy for Brides to picture themselves being betrothed in this dramatic, natural setting. |
| It goes without saying the signal moments of the day were the two fashion shows held at the Cliff Terrace reception site, with its commanding view of the Pala Mesa valley. Belle Mariée Bridal Salon produced the shows and the attending Brides teetered between ooh's, ah's and applause. |
|
|
|
As far as the eye could tell, the day's formula for success was to mix 1 part luxuriant Resort / 2 parts above-par vendors. Over 50 vendors rose to the occasion, putting on display a degree of professionalism in a class by itself. The tenor of the day was Wedding expertise and this was the place to meet the region's select few. |
| Aside from the Wedding professionals we observed in
attendance, we had the distinct pleasure of meeting Pala Mesa's
General Manager, Peter Rockwood. Those of us working in the
Wedding industry are well-familiar with the old saw, "Those who
aren't involved with Weddings don't 'get' Weddings." Following
the show, as we enjoyed a hard-earned boutique microbrew on the deck outside the
Resort's Aqua Terra Restaurant, Mr. Rockwood dropped by our
table. It took all of two minutes chatting with the gentleman to
fathom that he "gets" Weddings.
The before-mentioned cold ones were being shared with CAKE-pal, Officiant Lauren Seals. Lauren was stationed in the Sun Room, along with photographers Justin & Julie Hulse of Hulse Photography. |
|
|
|
The action in the main building unfolded in the Ballroom. We dished with videographer, Michael Scalise of Black Tie Productions, Malinda Burton of Jodee's Bakery, Karolin DiCristina of Belle Mariée, John & Wendy Rodriquez of VIP Events, alongside their pal Andrea, of Andrea's Photography. (We've known Andrea for years and still don't know if she has a last name). Shooters supremo - Heather & Skip Middleton of Shadowcatcher Imagery also graced the Ballroom. In addition, the Ballroom featured a woman who walked around surrounded by a table and a lady sporting a rack of wings. (You had to be there). |
The Resort's yellow brick road finally came to an end up at the Garden Pavilion (Wedding site) and the Cliff Terrace (reception site). This is where the fancy-pants pros bivouacked. At the Pavilion we chatted with CAKE-pal Jenelle Jackson of Sweet Flowers, who was entertained throughout the afternoon by harpist Holland Hettinger.
Next door at the Cliff Terrace, we hung with Randy Green of RK Green Studios, chatted with his partner Melissa Jewel, enjoyed a moment with Ken Bennett of Video Adventures, as well as DJ Hugh Swanke of A New Song. We finally had the opportunity to meet Jann Gentry, of Gentry Studios. One of Ms. Gentry's pictures is slated for a future CAKE Photograph Of The Month.
Chef Sean Sullivan was sushi-ing his brains out and we noted this was where the "real" bar was.
We also want to make mention of Pala Mesa's banquet staff. Throughout the day they were courteous, friendly and solicitous in helping Brides and vendors navigate the Resort's property. Oh yeah, we send a big hug and shout-out to old Pala Mesa friends Lynn Martucci, Luciana Nichols & Kasi Icona.
Being a golf resort, Pala Mesa's 1st annual Bridal Show left us with the impression there's more rounds to be played. All things considered, was this the best regional Bridal Show of the season? With a full-throated endorsement, you'll hear no argument from us!

MENIFEE LAKES COUNTRY CLUB In June we had the distinct pleasure of attending the monthly luncheon of the Inland Empire Association of Bridal Consultants' at Menifee Lakes Country Club. CAKE was honored to present our thoughts and experience on the topic of Wedding professionals banding together to promote regional Weddings, plus sharing the Wine Country Weddings section of our media partner, Neighbors Newspaper. |
| We were hosted by Menifee Lakes' gracious Wedding
Coordinator - Christa Davidson - who made certain all were
comfortable and well-fed. Also from MLCC was Jamie Conway,
who - under the guise of He Loves Me Flowers - designed the
beautiful floral arrangements.
ABC Director, John Goolsby of WeddingVideo.com, MC'd the luncheon and kept the afternoon running smoothly. Chairperson for the event was Wendy Alexis of Divine Design.
|
|
|
|
Winning the honor of traveling the greatest distance
to the
meeting was Becky McNey of Lake Arrowhead Resort.
Others in attendance included Debbie Quinn coordinator for To
Have And To Hold - as well as Los Willows - and her
daughter. We shared a luncheon table with Joel Udayke & Dawn
Dougherty of FlowerLoft. Gracing the Coordinators' Table
were Mary Jo Gallegos of An Affaire Of The Heart
(we've had the pleasure of working with Ms. Gallegos at Pala Mesa
Resort, plus rubbing elbows at a Bridal Show in The OC), Holly
Chavez of HMC Event Solutions and photographer Michelle
Johnson.
Also slated to attend were Jenner Goolsby, of Party Plus, harpist Julie Erhart and Mona of Always Special Events. Finally, we have to gush over the scrumptious end-of-lunch cake presented by Diane Conway of Diane's Desserts. |

LOVE THAT EVENT STUDIO Another corker of a Wine Country evening! It seems these days we tend to plan our social life around Wedding events. Bridal shows here, Wedding salons there. As a case in point, we spent a pleasant summer evening in June visiting Old Town Temecula to attend the Grand Opening of Love That Event! Studio. |
|
The evening was graciously hosted by Love That Event's proprietress, Cheryl Pollard. And Debi Matthews of Socialites Girls. As well, we were wined & dined by Carlos of Temecula House of Wines and Chef Dorothy Blandi. We were pleased, I'm sure, to bump into Jenelle Jackson of Sweet Flowers and Jake Ashcraft of Ashcraft Photography. As always, it was a pleasure to meet Wedding professionals whose paths we hadn't previously crossed, including photographer Loren Scott and DJ-for-the-evening Don Kilbury. Carol Hooker of Pala Casino attended as did, we're told, Rhonda of Timeless Portraits. (We missed meeting Rhonda). Among those we didn't spot, but who were displaying in the Studio were CAKE hall-of-famers Karolin Di Cristina & Michelle Brewer of Belle Mariée Bridal Salon and Carolyn Brown from All About Paper. Finally, we enjoyed sharing a glass of wine with Karon Cartwright of Ponte Winery. A pleasant Old Town evening it was!

GRAPE WALL OF CHINA The North County Times recently reported that China has invited a delegation from the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association to visit the country. The trip is planned for November 2009 and will be led by Riverside County Supervisor - Jeff Stone. Traveling with Supervisor Stone will be Bill Wilson, of Wilson Creek Winery, who also serves as President of the TVWA. |
At present, of China's 1 billion+ population, the growing middle class leans toward French and Australian wines. The NCT reports this growing demographic is spending approximately $2.4 billion on wine and Temecula Valley winemakers are eager to tap into that market.

MICHAEL JACKSON We briefly detour out of Wine Country to lament the passing of Michael Jackson. All who followed his career seem to agree on two points: 1). He lived a troubled life. 2). It'll be a long-time-coming before another entertainer appears who can similarly electrify an audience. For those of us who spent the better part of the 1980's chanting, "We want our MTV!", Michael Jackson provided us with the sound track for our lives. |
As the current news clips of his performances are
repeated on network news,
we can't help but experience what the Hawaiians refer to as "chicken
skin."
The man's talents gave us goose bumps!
Michael Jackson was 50.

DE LUXE WEDDINGS & EVENTS Having been enjoyably involved with 100's of Brides over the years, we've heard more than one say, "I loved planning my Wedding so much, I want to become a Wedding Planner." For a variety of reasons, Brides end up straying from this line of thought, but - once in a great while - we're privileged to meet a Bride who goes on to become a professional Wedding Coordinator. |
|
Case in point: over the course of the summer of 2008, we had the distinct pleasure of working at Ponte Winery with Wedding coordinator Kerry Pulverman of de Luxe Weddings & Events. And what a pleasure it was! Ms. Pulverman's a rare and fascinating left brain / right brain, artistic, way-organized sort who was married at Ponte in 2007. Peering into the future, as she started down the aisle on her Wedding day, she turned to Ponte's bridal hostess and said she'd return one day to work at the Winery. Kerry held true to that promise and within the year returned to the Winery to fine-tune her Wedding planning chops.
But wait, there's more! When Ponte recently decided to launch a new all-things-Wedding blog - Wedding Vines - on the Winery's website, they cast a net for a person passionate for Wedding planning and current on industry trends. To wit, Ms. Pulverman. Wedding Vines will address fresh ideas to make each Bride's Wedding unique, as well as discussing fascinating elements past Ponte Brides have added to their Weddings, discussions on unique Wedding themes and information on Wine Country's top vendors.
At the risk of repeating ourselves (one of our strong suits): Brides, Wedding Coordinators are worth their weight in gold! They make life easier for all involved with your Wedding, take care of those nagging little Wedding and reception tasks that often seem innumerable and - on the subject of nagging - can even be of service taming "helpful" relatives. Give Kerry a ringy-dingy. It'll be one of the best decisions you make about your Special Day.
